Student Mail

Mailbox Assignment

All students living on campus are required to have a campus mailbox.

New students are assigned a mailbox and sent a welcome letter approximately 3-4 weeks prior to their semester start date.

Your mailing address will remain the same all the years that you attend.

How to Address Mail

All mail and packages addressed to students on campus should follow the format below (where XXXX is the last four numbers of the student’s mailbox):

Student Name
CMC Box #27
XXXX
University of Rochester
500 Joseph C. Wilson Blvd
Rochester, New York 14627

There is no direct delivery to student dorms.

What You Can Send

LETTERS
Letter-sized mail will be placed in your mailbox and is available after 10:30 a.m.

PACKAGES
Are available for pickup after you’ve received an email from the CMC package store. A current UR ID is required. A limited number of wheeled carriers are available (with a $50 cash or URos deposit) to transport large items from the CMC to your dorm.

When You Can Send It

FALL SEMESTER
Students may begin shipping packages to the Campus Mail Center starting the second week of August.

SPRING SEMESTER
Students may begin shipping packages starting the second week of January.

Most packages will be processed and ready for pickup when you arrive on campus.

Restrictions

During student move-in, the CMC receives in excess of 1000 packages a day. To ensure the timely availability of your most critical items, it is suggested that you purchase convenience items locally and postpone ordering non-critical items until after move-in. Please send student care packages after the second week of the semester.

Package Pickup

Packages can be picked up at the package store window of the Campus Mail Center (CMC) during open hours. You will receive an email from us when your package is ready for pickup. Students must show their UR ID in order to pick up packages.

Important

Package Pickup Information

Please wait until you receive an email from Campus Mail before picking up your package.

A notification from a carrier or companies such as Amazon does NOT mean your package is ready. Carriers deliver to the University but your package must be processed through the Campus Mail Center before it is available for pickup. We will send you an email when your package is ready.

Package Lockers

Located on the front wall of the Campus Mail Center (CMC) in Todd Union, the package lockers allow for students to pick up their packages without having to wait in line at the regular package window. The lockers are available for students to pick up their packages any time Todd Union is open, not just during CMC business hours.

Packages stored in the lockers will generate an email to the student with a note that their package is in the lockers. The email has a 6-digit code that unlocks the locker containing your item(s) when entered on screen.

Packages left more than 48 hours are rescanned and available for pick-up at the package window during normal business hours for up to 21 days.

Mail Forwarding

First Class letters and flats can be forwarded. You can set up mail forwarding for your mailbox using the online Mail Forwarding System. No other mail can be forwarded. Magazine subscriptions will be recycled. Packages will be returned to sender.

FAQs

Who can have a campus mailbox?

All full-time faculty members, administrative departments, and full-time students are eligible.

How much does a mailbox cost?
The mailbox fee is $36 for six-months or $72 for a year-long rental as of May 2023. Student mailbox fees are usually billed by the Bursar’s office.
Can I have my mail forwarded while I am on break?

Yes. Only first-class letters and flats will be forwarded. Magazines will be recycled. Packages will be returned to sender. To update your forwarding mail address or arrange for mail forwarding, please visit the online Mail Forwarding System.

What time of day do UPS, FedEx, Amazon and DHL deliver to campus?

All carriers deliver between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Your package is not ready for pickup until you’ve received an email from us (not the carrier). Your package must be scanned into our system and its location noted before it is ready for pickup.

What time of day does the US Postal Service (USPS) deliver to campus?

USPS does not deliver directly to the Campus Mail Center. Mail is dropped off at the University’s main Mail Operations Center and then delivered by mail couriers to the Campus Mail Center. Normal arrival time for USPS mail is between 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Overnight Express Mail is delivered between 11:30 a.m. and noon. Please note, USPS does not deliver to the University on Saturdays. If a Saturday delivery is needed, we suggest using UPS or FedEx.

What carriers do you accept?

We accept shipments from all major carriers, including UPS, FedEx, DHL, and the US Postal Service (USPS). We do not accept freight shipments.

Can I send perishables to a student?

Yes, however, flowers, plants, fruit arrangements, baked goods, or similar items should be sent through local vendors or carriers for maximum shelf life. Please have the outside of the item marked as “Perishable”. Students will receive an email when their item is ready for pickup and are asked to pick up perishables within 48 hours.

What if I don't pick up my package?

If your package is unclaimed for 7 days, you will receive a second notification. After 14 days, a third notification is sent. If your package is unclaimed after 21 days, a final email notification will be sent to you. Packages not claimed by the date listed in the final notification are returned to sender.

What about emergency deliveries or medications?

Please be mindful that the Campus Mail Center is only open on Saturdays during the academic year. In addition, the US Postal Service does NOT deliver to the CMC on Saturdays. If you are expecting an emergency delivery, please email cmc@facilities.yule521.net and include “Emergency” or “Medication” in the subject line. You may also call us at 585-275-3991. Only UPS and FedEx Saturday delivery confirmations are received at the CMC on Saturdays.
